CFC and Cook Medical Become MCEC Investing Partners

A huge thank you to CFC Properties and Cook Medical for becoming Investing Workplace Partners in addition to sponsoring the MCEC Solar, Wind &Watts Roadshow!IMG_20160615_120025cfccook_logo_cmyk Because of their generosity, in addition to helping students learn about renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power through engaging hands-on activities, each of the 350+ students we visit this month will receive a free LED light bulb to take home to help educate their families about energy efficiency and to help reduce utility bills at their homes. We are lucky to have such terrific community partners!

Want to Learn More about the Roadshow?

The Monroe County Energy Challenge and Harmony Environmental Science students are teaming up to teach local 2-4th grade students about renewable energy resources and energy conservation!bulb-solar-panel-and-eolic-fan_1134-129The program was designed by BHSS teacher Amanda Figolah and centers around upper-class high school students teaching younger students about the importance of conserving resources and saving energy.  Students learn about renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power through engaging hands-on activities and demonstrations.  We plan to visit all MCCSC schools, RBBCSC schools, and independent schools in the upcoming year!

20161025_141340-2Lessons are guided by representatives from the MCEC and Environmental Science students from Harmony School. We are using this unique approach to teaching because we know that youth can be catalysts for change in our community and the world. It is our belief that young people have the environmental education, imagination and motivation to make positive changes in our world, and this program will encourage them to lead at a young age.20161025_142935-2The program  design incorporates various ages of learners because conducting educational outreach provides older students with leadership experience, as well as can make the lessons more fun for the younger learners.  Activities include solar car races, discovering how wind turbines generate electricity, and exploring the watt demand of common appliances.

20161025_133841-2The program launched on October 18th, 2016 and will visit 6 schools, 17 classes and over 350 students in Monroe County by the end of November. Thank you to Harmony Environmental Science students for being  fantastic community leaders and teachers!
